Response to open letter from Bishop David Zubik

As Bishop Zubik noted in his statement, the University of Pittsburgh aspires to improve lives. For decades, research institutions around the world have utilized fetal cells and tissue to help improve—and save—countless lives. Pitt is home to one of the most powerful examples of this work: The polio vaccine has prevented paralysis in 18 million people and saved the lives of 1.5 million children and counting. Today, every leading biomedical institution in the nation is working with fetal cells and tissue—alongside the full array of research tools available—to help advance society’s understanding and treatment of devastating diseases, such as cancer, HIV, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Without question: This is important, life-changing and life-saving work.
